Communication And Commitment

Communication & Commitment

Here are TWO songs offering sage advice on communication and commitment from a woman’s viewpoint AND a man’s perspective.  Importantly, these concepts are applicable to virtually ALL relationships.  Consistent with the tradition often followed in a wedding (a  celebration of what some believe represents ultimate success in a relationship), these music videos collectively offer:

  • SOMETHING OLDBilly Joel‘s classic “Tell Her About It“, along with a retrospective salute to The Ed Sullivan Show);
  • SOMETHING NEW — Glee‘s rendition of “Tell Him“;
  • SOMETHING BORROWED — In particular, these music videos graciously produced by Billy Joel and the cast of Glee) and;
  • SOMETHING BLUE — The dresses worn by the women in the Glee performance, featuring Melissa Benoist and Heather Morris.

Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover

Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover - 640 x 353

In last week’s America’s Got Talent competition, three jean-clad “schlubs” entered from stage right to deliver a performance for the ages, and likely kicked off an exciting  group career sure to bring joy to millions for decades to come.

In their introductions, they reported having only recently met on-line, and face-to-face for the first time, a few days prior to their audition.   Referring to their group name as “Forte” (meaning “something in which a person excels”), they introduced themselves as an international amalgam of fresh voices: “Fernando [Varela] . . . from San Juan, Puerto Rico”; “Hana [Ryu] . . . from South Korea” and “Josh Page . . . from New York”.  Needless to say, expectations were low.

They sang Pie Jesu from the Requiem mass composed in 1985 by Andrew Lloyd Webber to honor his father, who had passed away a few years prior – the lyrics are in Latin.

In addition to taking in this magnificent performance, which personally brings tears to my eyes EVERY time I watch it, the moral to this story is simple – “Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover” — for by being open-minded and willing to embrace the unexpected, you give yourself the serendipitous opportunity to live in the moment and experience something truly inspiring.

Pie Jesu

Pie Jesu, pie Jesu, pie Jesu, pie Jesu
Qui tollis peccata mundi
Dona eis requiem, dona eis requiem
Agnus Dei, Agnus Dei, Agnus Dei, Agnus Dei
Qui tollis peccata mundi
Dona eis requiem, dona eis requiem

Translation ]

Merciful Jesus (4x)
Father, who takes away the sins of the world
Grant them rest (2x)
Lamb of God (4x)
Father, who takes away the sins of the world
Grant them rest (2x)

The Real You

The Real You - 640 x 173

The accompanying video is an evocative masterpiece set to an inspiring soundtrack, along with the majestic images of a simulated trip.  It features the wisdom of Alan Watts, the British-born philosopher, on the subject of YOU (yes YOU), and YOUR relation to EVERYONE else and EVERY THING in the ever-expanding continuum we call the UNIVERSE.  Pretty deep stuff, huh?

Universe - 640 x 173

Known for his views on enlightenment and transcendence (becoming all that one can be, and then assisting others toward reaching their full potential), Mr. Watts touches on the pre-requisite necessary to reaching these lofty goals — to wit, “waking up”.   And one need not be an expert in Zen Buddhism to appreciate the power of this message; moreover, as the fantastically complex being that you are, you may become emotionally moved by it and find yourself watching it again and again.

If this video has the same impact on you, as it did for me, then I have two words for you . . .

you’re welcome

Be A Champion

Hall of Fame - You Can Be A Champion - Bordered - 650 x 249

If you see something you don’t like in this world, why don’t you champion a cause to change it for the better?  I’m serious.   Do it for your people . . . do it for your family . . .  do it for your pride . . . do it for your country . . . just DO IT !

Believe you can go the distance and move mountains, straight through hell if need be.  You could be a hero and burn with the brightest flame, and the world’s gonna know your name — for if you persist, you’ll surely be standing in a Hall of Fame.

When You Believe

Nothing is Impossible . . . - 650 x 181

The foundation for miracles is an unwavering belief that it is within the realm of possibility that they can be achieved — a message so melodically and eloquently delivered by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.

[A brief advertisement may precede this performance & lyrics are shown below.]

When You Believe

Many nights we prayed
With no proof anyone could hear
In our hearts a hope for a song
We barely understood
Now we are not afraid
Although we know there’s much to fear
We were moving mountains
Long before we knew we could… (whoa, yes)

There can be miracles
When you believe
Though hope is frail
It’s hard to kill
Who knows what miracles
You can achieve
When you believe somehow you will
You will when you believe

In this time of fear
When prayer so often proves in vain
Hope seems like the summer bird
Too swiftly flown away
Yet now I’m standing here
My heart’s so full, I can’t explain
Seeking faith and speaking words
I never thought I’d say

There can be miracles
When you believe (When you believe)
Though hope is frail
It’s hard to kill
Who knows what miracles
You can achieve (You can achieve)
When you believe somehow you will
You will when you believe

They don’t always happen when you ask
And it’s easy to give in to your fear
But when you’re blinded by your pain
Can’t see your way clear through the rain
A small but still resilient voice
Says love is very near…

There can be miracles (Miracles)
When you believe (Boy, when you believe)
Though hope is frail
[It’s hard…] (Hard to kill, oh)
Who knows what miracles
You can achieve (You can achieve)
When you believe somehow you will (Somehow, somehow, somehow)
Now you will (I know, I know, know)
You will when you believe…
(You will when you) You will when you…believe…

Just believe… (You will…)
[You gotta believe…] (Just believe…)
You will when you…
…Believe.

I’ll Stand By You

Helping Hand

This performance by Angie Miller during the “Top Five” round of American Idol was touchingly dedicated to her nearby hometown of Boston, still reeling from the tragedy which struck days earlier.

This notion of being there for others in need is an oh-so-enriching element of self-actualization and the inner happiness thus derived is unmatched.  Moreover, the real magic in gestures of goodwill toward others in need is how contagious they can become.

Drop The Baggage . . .

Pearl of Wisdom - 640 x 360

. . . And Set Yourself Free.

The below video clip was broadcast on Fox’s American Idol.  It features a pretty 18-year-old named Angela Miller, who performed an original song during the Hollywood solo round, serving as the basis for selecting the “top 20 girls” for the remainder of the  competition — a gutsy move.

I think you’ll agree that a “star has been born”, and that “Angie” is a legitimate triple-threat talent as a singer, musician and songwriter.  Her lyrics are as powerful and emotionally evocative as her performance, and impart a pearl of wisdom worth remembering . . . drop the baggage of the past that weighs you down, so you may travel light and with ease on your journey toward self-actualization.

[PS: A brief commercial may precede this performance and lyrics are below.]

You Set Me Free

You find me here alone
I hear a voice that’s so unknown.
It strikes courage up my backbone,
Strengthen my heart.
A life set apart;
I see that’s what you are.

You come, you come with open arms.
And you say I love you for who you are.
When I was haunted and alone
With this baggage on my back, dragging me down.
You set me free, yeah.
You set me free, yeah.
You set me free.

Almost Home

Almost Home by Yulia Allen - 640 x 478

“Almost Home” by Yulia Allen

For most, nothing epitomizes love, comfort and well-being as “home” – for it is not merely the gathering place for ones loved ones;  it is a place for solace, renewal and growth, as well as the launching pad for dreams and aspirations.  It is the incubator of many life memories, and as such, cannot be replaced.  While there, you may at times take its splendor for granted; however, when away, your yearning to return grows with each passing day.

Metaphorically, home can also represent one’s life dream, for which you may have labored arduously for years and years.  And as you begin to realize you’re on “the home stretch” toward realizing that dream, and need the impetus to complete the last five percent (often the most difficult), you summon additional strength from a reservoir within, which you never knew existed . . . through a simple reminder.

And as you approach your destination . . . a gently repeating voice of anticipation in the back of your mind kicks in to remind you that you’re . . . almost home.

Enchanting Journey

Enchanting Journey

Those who’ve seen “Life of Pi” were treated to an exciting unplanned journey of a young man and a bengal tiger, who serendipitously find themselves unlikely sojourning partners in a lifeboat lost at sea — the lone survivors of a typhoon-induced shipwreck.

Metaphorically, this serves as a reminder that: “People make plans, and God laughs”; and that no matter how overwhelming a “storm” life may serve up, you can overcome ANY resulting setback, as long as you BELIEVE you can . . . and oh what an enchanting journey of discovery, adventure, hope and triumph your life will thus become.
